Hope for Nicholas

A headache became an MRI. That MRI showed a tumor–racquetball-sized, on the right frontal lobe of Nicholas’s brain.

Nicholas Shannon is a happy, sweet, well-mannered little boy. His younger brother Gregory idolizes him, and a little sister Emery is due in August. The last thing this family expected was the diagnosis that Nicholas received. After invasive seven-hour brain surgery, Nicholas was diagnosed with the worst possible brain cancer a human can have: Glioblastoma Multiforme.

His tumor is extremely aggressive and does not respond well to medical interventions. Nicholas will now begin very intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments. His future will be determined by how his cancer responds to this therapy, but the odds are low for long-term survival.

Nicholas’s family is offering a great opportunity for you to show your support and help him live his life to the fullest.Nicholas

The HOPE FOR NICHOLAS BENEFIT CONCERT is being held in Dallas, GA, on July 24, and all proceeds from the concert will go towards the family’s unwavering fight for their child. The concert is family friendly and is a great chance to enjoy a night together while supporting a wonderful foundation.

Every day is a good day to give, but July 24 is an especially great day. A day that could help save the life of a little boy.

UPDATE from Hope for Nicholas, posted on 8/6/2010:

Hello,

I want to thank you again for publicizing the benefit concert we hosted for Nicholas. The Paulding County Sheriff estimated we had at least 1200 guests in attendance! It rained from 4:30 to 6, but they came anyway! In just 8 weeks, we raised $42,000.

Nicholas is home now and doing great. He has an MRI on the 16th and a Duke consult a few days later. We just paid his medical bills (and housing out in OKC) from the first 6 weeks of treatment — $8,000 out-of-pocket. I’m so thankful we raised enough money to cover those expenses.

I thought you would like to know the results of the campaign. Thank you again!

If There Were Two of Me

Wouldn’t it be great if you could clone yourself? I cannot tell you how many times IN A DAY I wish that there were two of me. For my husband that is a nightmare. Two of my opinions. Two of my debit cards. Two of my never-ending-things-I-want-to-do-to-the-house lists. I just don’t think the poor boy could take it.

But for me and my kids it would be fantastic. Think of what we could do, ladies! We could take one kid to ballet AND take the other one to soccer. We could be folding laundry AND be emptying the dishwasher. Better yet, we could be making the bed while also sleeping in it!!!! Or spending “quality time” (read between the lines here) with our husbands AND be getting a relaxing spa pedicure.

Oh, just the thought of it makes me giddy. Never again would there be that guilt for the thing that has to give. Sometimes it is one of my kids. Mom, you always take care of Baby. You never play with me. Can you hear my heart breaking through your speakers? OMG. Never again would you have to TIVO Glee because your husband wants to have relations. I know I already mentioned that one, but let’s be honest about that issue! Never again would you have to drag your family from one Christmas day event to the next.

With all the double dipping that could be done, something really strange might happen. You might actually have time to do nothing. I know that seems far fetched. The earth is flat, global warming is real, Victoria Beckham has fat cells, Mommy has time to chill. All of these things are equally ridiculous. But it sure would be nice…

P.S. Check out the picture at the top of this post. If we could clone ourselves, we would ALL be this hot. Why? Because we could vacuum the house AND go to the gym.

everything i ever wanted.

The other day, I time traveled. Here’s what happened: I was just driving along with my 3-year-old and 3-month-old in the backseat of the SUV when all of a sudden, a song came on the radio. You know those songs that have such strong links to the past that they immediately transport you back in time? The songs that remind you of eighth-grade dances, old boyfriends and summers at the beach? Well, this was one of those songs.

It came on the radio and BAM! I was 16 again, driving down the road with the tape blaring from the tape deck of my black Chevrolet Cavalier, windows cranked down, unglued red ceiling upholstery rippling in the breeze.

I can remember this scene clear as day. I remember feeling free, unfettered– the world was mine for the taking.

I snapped back to the present and glanced in the rear-view mirror at my two children, both of whom had fallen asleep in the backseat. “I’m definitely not unfettered, now,” I thought, looking at my sleeping fetters. And that’s when I had a rare moment of clarity.

At 16, when the world was mine for the taking, do you want to know what I wanted to take? Everything I now have: loving husband, son, daughter, cozy home, energizing career, car with upholstery intact.

In other words, I have everything I always dreamed of. Which was quite a moment of clarity, considering I tend to keep a constant tally of what I’d like to have but don’t (new couch, granite countertops, trip to Italy). Looking in that rear-view mirror, I was honestly overwhelmed with the reality that I am absolutely, unequivocally, without a doubt BLESSED.

And I realized that if, at age 16, I had been able to time travel forward, into that exact moment of time, and seen myself, driving down the road in my big ol’ SUV with my two precious fetters, I would have been blown away by how incredible my future was going to be. (Not to mention the complete awe I would have felt at my six-disk CD changer.)

The truth of my life–and I bet it’s the same for yours–is that we are WAY more blessed than we generally take time to acknowledge. So, go ahead. Acknowledge it.
