ADHD {free} parent night

the gig:

Did you know that September is ADHD Awareness month? Well…if you’re wondering why you should care (after all, you’re only ADHD when you’re surfing the Web), here are some surprising stats:

  • Nearly 10 percent of American kids age 4 – 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD.
  • When compared to teens without the disorder, teens with ADHD have four times as many car wrecks.
  • Parents of a child with ADHD are three times more likely to divorce or separate than parents of kids without the condition.
  • Children with ADHD are more prone to substance abuse.
  • The work loss cost of adults with ADHD and family members of people with ADHD is $3.7 billion annually, according to the CDC.
  • Two thirds of all kids with a current diagnosis take medication to try to control the symptoms, but the drugs don’t always work and can have damaging side effects.

Pretty surprising? We thought so. This list of facts, as well as the scores of families we know personally who are directly impacted by ADHD, makes us incredibly grateful for resources in our community like LearningRx– a brain training center in Kennesaw that specializes in helping children (and adults) triumph over ADHD symptoms. In fact, a full 37 percent of LearningRx graduates are able to reduce or eliminate their ADHD medication after brain training (according to a 2011 study).

For more tips on building attention and responding to ADHD behaviors at home, join LearningRx for a special ADHD Awareness Night this Thursday, September 29, at 6:30 p.m. Owner Kristen Thompson will share tips, and renowned pediatrician Dr. Clark Cantrell of Summit Pediatrics in Marietta will speak, as well. Dr. Cantrell is a neurobehavioral expert and specializes in treating children with ADHD.

To sweeten the pot, all of the Sept. 29 ADHD Seminar attendees will receive a complimentary Comprehensive Cognitive Skills Assessment and Consultation ($199 value) when scheduling for a future date on the night of the seminar only. This is HUGE.

Help spread the word! This is a fabulous resource for anyone affected by ADHD.

calling all foodies {or anyone who loves a good time}

I’m turning off the soaps, throwing my bonbons in the trash, and pitching in to make a difference in our community. I recently signed up to help plan the March of Dimes 23rd Annual Signature Chefs Auction– a grand ol’ event that you need to know about.

the gig:

1. March of Dimes is the #1 saver of babies in the world. Their research promotes healthy pregnancies (they championed folic acid), saves the lives of preemies (the APGAR score was a MOD discovery), and prevents birth defects (you can thank them for the polio vaccine, too).

2. Their acronym is MOD. So…mod.march-of-dimes-signature-chefs-auction-chefs-prepare-dishes-774d3ce7be60af83

3. The Signature Chefs Auction involves food. I could stop there, but let’s delve into some details, shall we? Top chefs from Cobb and Atlanta (Ray’s on the River, Chicken and the Egg, Johnnie Gabriel, Mamie’s Cupcakes, etc.) set up stations around the room at the Marietta Country Club to cook in front of cocktail-casual clad guests (that would be you), who get to sample a truckload of tasty tapas. With wine. And dessert. And a live band. And awesome auction items to bid on for a steal.

4. Did I mention they save babies?

5. I’ve been working really hard to secure stellar swag and stash for the live and silent auctions and goody bags. And we have scored lots and lots of spectacular items (art, furniture, autographed sports gear, vacations, jewelry, decor). Now we just need people in the seats (again, that would be you).

So, come wine & dine with me on September 29! It’s a Thursday night, from 6-9. It’s for a good cause. And it will be TONS of FUN. Here’s the link to learn more and order your (tax deductible) tickets: marchofdimes.com/georgia.

And, yes, I was kidding about the bonbons and soaps. In case you were wondering what I do all day.

Sincerely hope you can come!!!

motherhood the musical! {an interview with a cast member}

We enjoy comedy, we enjoy music, we enjoy motherhood…. So, what do you get when you put it all together? Motherhood The Musical!

the gig:

Motherhood the Musical Cast

The cast of Motherhood the Musical.

Motherhood The Musical is coming to Atlanta’s 14th Street Playhouse September 22-November 20. Grab your girlfriends, your huney, your mom and get ready for laughs, tears, smiles and most importantly…love!

The musical tells the story of Brooke (played by Ingrid Cole), Barb (Mary Kathryn Kaye), Tasha (Jewel Lucien) and Amy (Lisa Manuli) as they journey through the joys of motherhood together.

LBD/LRW recently had a fascinating chat with Lisa Manuli who portrays Amy, a soon-to-be mom, in Motherhood The Musical. Here, she shares her passion for the play and some insider’s tidbits about this soon-to-open performance.

the gossip:

LBD/LRW: So, Lisa, where are you from?

L: I’m originally from New York, but I live in Atlanta now.

LBD/LRW: When did you first begin acting and singing?

L: It’s all I ever wanted to do since I was kid. I’ve been doing it since as early as I could open my mouth! When I was in elementary school, I joined drama club and was involved in chorus.

LBD/LRW: Tell us about your character in Motherhood The Musical.

L: Her name is Amy. She is the pregnant one. She is actually due in 3 weeks at the time of the show. She is the super positive one with a well-organized life. In Amy’s eyes, “I’ve read all the magazines; I’ve read all the websites. Everything is going to be beautiful.”

LBD/LRW: You are not currently a mother yourself, but you can definitely still relate to your character Amy. What have you learned about motherhood through the musical?

L: For everyone, cast and audience, it reinforces that relationship with your mother, or your child, or both, and it makes you sit back and reflect. It’s made me sit back and think about the sacrifices my mother made for me growing up. It makes me understand where that love and dedication comes from.

LBD/LRW: What’s your experience of portraying a “soon-to-be” mom on stage been like?

L: It’s been awesome! The group of women I work with is amazing and the show is amazing. It’s a lot of fun because of the audience members who are already mothers see me in themselves: “Oh my gosh, you are so me, I so did that!” I feel not only am I, as an actor, being able to deliver a performance for people that is relatable, but the celebration of motherhood on stage has truly affected people too. We can go home every night and make someone call their mother or child.

Lisa Headshot

Lisa Manuli, who plays Amy in Motherhood the Musical.

LBD/LRW: So, do you have a favorite scene?

L: “Now I Know” is one of my favorite songs; I sing it to the baby after I’ve delivered. It’s during that awkward stage when there is the realization of a new life in my arms.

LBD/LRW: What makes Motherhood the Musical unique?

L: This show in particular depends on the connection of the women involved. We all connect with each other so much, and we do feel the sense of Motherhood. There isn’t one second when we don’t feel the love or trust you need to do a show like this. The love is still there. That’s the heart of the show; it’s been amazing.

LBD/LRW: How has the play been unique compared to previous works that you have performed in?

L: In so many ways, this play affects people. Women walk into the audience as strangers but they leave as friends because they have shared that common bond of motherhood that we’ve created with everyone.

LBD/LRW: What has been a highlight from working with the cast and crew of Motherhood The Musical?

L: This piece has something unique; I’ll see generations of women who come together to see the show. There’s grandmother, mother and daughter; that’s three generations down that come see the show together. I know they walk out feeling like they’ve experienced that sisterhood.

Also, the men have been amazing when they come. I don’t think some of the men know how much the play will affect them too.

LBD/LRW: Who would you recommend come see Motherhood The Musical?

L: I would recommend it to everyone to come see it. It’s such a fun time. It covers so much joy, excitement and love. The music is amazing, too. There are so many styles that it really will appeal to anyone. You don’t have to be a mom; you just have to have a mom. If you haven’t seen it, come, no matter who you are.

LBD/LRW: So, after being a part of this incredible musical, what is one piece of advice you have for women?

L: For some people, having a child is what they’re meant to do, and for other people, it’s not. For those who aren’t meant to have children right now, go home and call your mother and tell her you love her.

packway handle band at the strand

the gig:

Remember when we told you about the 2011 Music Series at The Strand? Well, it’s still in full swing! And on Friday, October 7, a hometown band is coming back to perform on the very stage they used to hear music streaming from back in high school. The Packway Handle Band has four out of five members that hale from the Marietta/Kennesaw/Acworth area.

Packway_CD

Packway Handle's latest album What Are We Gonna Do Now?

If you’re not familiar with this eclectic band of bluegrass playin’ local boys, you should be. They play traditional bluegrass instruments, but they are just as likely to play a Violent Femmes or Stevie Wonder cover as they are one of their original bluegrass tunes. In case you’re now wondering if you might have dated one of the band members in high school, let us introduce you to them – Tom Baker on banjo and vocals, Josh Erwin on guitar and vocals, Andrew Heaton on fiddle and vocals, Zach McCoy on bass, and Michael Paynter on mandolin and vocals.

The show is sure to be a blast and you won’t want to miss it!
