Team Leah of Aqua-Tots Makes Waves to Fight Cancer in Swim Across America Race

Leah’s story:

Leah Anderson was a little girl who loved to swim. She began learning at Aqua-Tots swim school as a toddler, and quickly decided the butterfly stroke was her favortie. Leah was diagnosed with Wilm’s Disease, Stage IV in January 2009 at the age of 3. She underwent surgery at Scottish Rite, and started chemo in February 2009 in efforts to reduce the tumor to an operable size. On April 1, 2009, Leah’s left kidney and tumor were successfully removed, and eight days later, radiation treatment began on the area and on the lungs. The surgery and treatments were successful, and in January 2012, Leah was transferred to the cancer survivor clinic! Unfortunately, in July 2012 she was diagnosed with leukemia: 20% of Leah’s marrow had a secondary cancer known as AML – a nasty form of leukemia. Leah was only the 9th child in the WORLD to develop AML after Wilm’s. She was admitted to Egleston Hospital where she received intense chemotherapy, and a donor match was quickly found! Following the transplant, however, the fight was even harder and she experienced significant ups and downs.

Throughout Leah’s journey there were tears, laughter, games, pranks, songs, special events and visitors – new friendships made and old ones deepened. Sadly, Leah Marie Anderson, age 7, of Dallas, GA, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013.

Swim Across America:

In honor of Leah and her brave fight, Aqua-Tots owner Malena Hankins, along with others, formed Team Leah to participate in the inaugural Swim Across America event in Atlanta held at Lake Spivey on May 5, 2013. Swim Across America is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming-related events. Team Leah certainly did their part! They exceeded their goal of $1,000 – making them an SAA Superstar participant – and completed the swim, even though the weather was less than cooperative (read: rainy and freezing!).

And they weren’t the only ones who braved the weather in support of this great cause. There were over 200 kids at the Olympian Clinic with 12 Olympians, 4 National Team members and a handful of Swim Atlanta coaches. Over 300 people registered for the Open Water Swim at Lake Spivey, raising $250,000 for pediatric cancer research at the race’s beneficiary, Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Leah’s mom, Rona Roberts, spoke to the participants after the race:

Mothers and Magnolias Tea at Marietta Museum of History

the gig:

The good ol’ days, when times were simpler and ladies donned dresses and hats to go to lunch, will never come around again. They are but a picturesque snapshot in our parents’ photo albums that have been left behind in our world of iPhones and Tivo. For one day, however, The Marietta Museum of History will take mothers and grandmothers back to those slower-paced days when they recreate the atmosphere and experience of the old Rich’s Downtown Magnolia Tea Room. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped right back into that department store social scene.

Guests will dine on luncheon style foods made from original Magnolia Room recipes, as they enjoy a fabulous fashion show presented by Carol Westbrook from The Magnolia Room on Whitlock. Carol is the perfect girl to recreate this fashion experience, given the expertise she gained working in the fashion department of Rich’s in the 70′s. The nostalgia will continue with Jeff Clemmons, Rich’s historian and author of Rich’s: A Southern Institution, reliving stories from the glory days of the department store Magnolia Room. You might not be able to bring back these days, but you can take your mom back to them for a moment in time.

the guide:

date: Saturday, May 11th, 2013

time: 1:00 to 3:00pm

address: Marietta Museum of History’s Virginia Tumlin Community Room at 1 Depot St Marietta, 30060

Swift Cantrell Classic Race

the gig:

Swift Cantrell Park is basically the ultimate in parks…separate playgrounds for little and big kids, multiple walking paths, open spaces for picnicking and kite-flying, pavilions for get-togethers, a skate park, a dog park, and best of all, clean restrooms! And the awesomeness is just getting awesomer. There’s an entire masterplan that has yet to be completed. Of course, this can only be done with increased funds. Enter the Swift Cantrell Classic that happens every year on Mother’s Day weekend.

Why would they need our money, you ask? Yes, it is funded by the City of Kennesaw, but most people who use the park don’t live in the city. Therefore, The Swift Cantrell Classic 5K was founded to assist the City of Kennesaw in raising funds for the Capital Improvements so the Park Masterplan can be achieved without putting the financial responsibility of the park on the city taxpayers.

So, if you’ve used the park, want to use the park, or know people who use the park, you should come on out and run (or walk!).

Here’s the scoop:

- 5K and a 1 mile fun

- Begins at City Hall in Downtown Kennesaw, continues down Main Street, loops through Swift Cantrell, back through downtown, and ends at City Hall

- Race electronically timed for fast, accurate results

- Post-race awards ceremony with awards for 14 groups

Vendor tents with samples and giveaways

- Race day refreshments for participants

- Breakfast/after party sponsored by Kennesaw First Baptist Church

the guide:

date: Saturday, May 11

times: 1 Mile – 7:30 am; 5K – 8:00 am

packet pick-up dates: Thursday May 9th 4-8pm OR Friday May 10th 4-8pm @ Big Peach Running Co. 1625 Ridenour Boulevard Kennesaw, GA 30152

Marietta Food Trucks: New Start Date!

the gig:

**The start date for the 2013 Marietta Food Truck Rally has been CHANGED! The new date is now Monday, May 6.**

Mount Paran’s PromRED: Do Prom on Purpose

the gig:

The dress, shoes, hair, nails, purse, limo, dinner…the list of prom expenses is nearly endless. Every year students spend what seems like endless amounts of money on themselves for this one night. And who can blame them? After putting in a hard year of work, a night of treating yourself seems in order. But, what if you cut back a little on this night? Do your own nails, maybe even your own hair. Buy a gently used dress, borrow a friend’s shoes. “Why would I do that?” you ask. What if you knew it would make an impact in someone’s life that you can’t even fathom?

This is the question students at Mt. Paran Christian School asked themselves. And they’ve answered loud and clear. They’d give up the finer prom things in a heartbeat and give the saved money to the fight to end slavery and human trafficking. They even created an organization around it, which they’ve deemed PromRED.

“America’s spending on prom is out of control,” says their website. “It’s time to join together, stop the waste, and fight for something bigger than ourselves. So have fun at prom, eliminate the excess, and do prom on purpose… turn your promRED!”

Mt. Paran’s PromRED is tonight on the Marietta Square, and they are inviting others to join their cause. You can pledge individually or collaborate with your school’s prom organizers to be an “all-in school.”
