prom she wrote {and won}

Alisha McKellar is a local photographer who had an idea to help one young girl get to prom. See, the thing is that every high school girl wants to go to prom, but not every high school girl can afford to go to prom. Add up the costs: tickets, dress, shoes, hair, makeup, nails, flowers, transportation, dinner. It ain’t cheap. And there’s simply no way to chintz out when you’re talking about your prom, ya’ll.

So Alisha launched a “Win Your Way to Prom” writing contest, inviting any junior or senior girl currently enrolled in the show choir at North Paulding High School to enter to win a virtually expenses-paid night to their prom. Here’s how it went down, in Alisha’s words:

the contest

To win the contest, all the girls had to do was write an anonymous essay about why this experience would mean so much to them. The winner would win the things they needed for prom. I can tell you that I probably went through an entire box of Kleenex reading through these girls’ essays. Choosing a winner from this group of amazing girls was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my business so far. There wasn’t a single bad essay, and each girl had their own incredible story to share.

the community outpouring

Before I share the winner, and her photos from prom day, I would love to thank all of the people who helped make my crazy idea a beautiful reality!

First of all, Mrs. Wernette, the choral director at North Paulding High School. She was the entire reason this was even possible! Even though I’ve only just met her, I can tell she is an amazing person by the type of students she is teaching. They all seem to love her and they speak so highly of her.

the sponsors

Ed Long, with BB&T at 7 Hills, for the two Prom Tickets

Urban Renewal Consignment, located in Marietta, for the beautiful dress

La Bella Spa & Salon, located in front of Seven Hills, for hair and makeup

King Tux Rentals, located near Town Center Mall in Kennesaw, for the tuxedo rental (and also for working with local high schools for music program fundraisers)

And an enormous thank you to Acworth Florist, not only for the amazing flowers, but also for such incredible customer service

Elizabeth, at Little Black Dress Little Red Wagon Magazine, for all of her support and help

The winner also received a gift certificate for a manicure/pedicure from a private sponsor.

And, although the winner already had shoes she loved, I would still love to thank Kristi, at Lola Rose Boutique in Ivy Walk, Vinings, for offering one of their gorgeous pairs of shoes!

{holiday} week 3: the pitfalls of vacation

As you know, we’re following Holiday’s 90-day weight loss challenge. Here’s this (adorable) Acworth resident’s latest (hysterical) update on the goods and bads of shedding pounds and getting healthier.

by Holiday

I have a confession to make. I’ve been on vacation. And we all know what happens on vacation. Sayonara workouts and healthy food…hello laziness and ice cream. I knew this week of bliss was on the horizon, but surprisingly enough my mindset has changed a bit. Since beginning this 90 day challenge I have been focused on changing everything in my life, not just the turkey sandwich I typically eat for lunch. After all, we make thousands of decisions on a daily basis and the decision of what to have for breakfast is just one of them.

a shake-y start

When I told Bill (my uber fabulous trainer who I can’t stop bragging about) that I would be heading to Florida for a week his response was this: “Awesome! Bring your Magic Bullet Blender (it’s a perfect size for travel), pack your shake mix, and have a great time.”

Really??? Is he serious? Does this guy honestly think I’m going to make SHAKES for breakfast and lunch while lounging on the beach? Clearly he was hallucinating.

While I decided to leave my blender at home, I reluctantly threw the shake mix in my suitcase. After all, there are pictures of me wearing offensive spandex clothing on the internet. Maybe I should give the whole “nutritional shakes on vacation” thing a whirl.

cravings…of a new sort

Holiday (left) at Hard Rock Cafe this week, with bestie Dacia.

I never thought I would say this…but…wow. I am so glad I did. Within a day or two I was actually CRAVING a shake for breakfast. The thought of greasy food made me nauseous, and all I could think about was blended frozen strawberries. Our beach house was fully stocked with a blender and just about everything else I could think of. No excuses.

Yes, I sat on the beach and enjoyed a Vi-Shape shake for breakfast. I even whipped up another batch for my mom and sister- and guess what? They were hooked after the first taste. We had a great time experimenting with different recipes and combinations…and I’m pretty sure we hit the JACKPOT with the cocoa powder, iced coffee, peanut butter concoction. Watch out Starbucks…Visalus just may have you beat on this one.

it’s official…i’m a junkie

This year has been one of tremendous change for me- it’s all about baby steps and making the commitment to change. This isn’t to say I didn’t have my fair share of indulgences while lounging in the sand for a week. Come on people, I’m only human. But after almost a month of swapping a meal or two a day for a nutritional shake I can really see and feel a difference.

I’ve decided this challenge isn’t going to stop at 90 days- this is something I will continue to incorporate into my daily life. Yep, it’s official. I’m turning into a Visalus junkie and my body is saying thank you.

Meet BJ Corpening, personal chef and owner of Bread of Life

the goods:

Eating healthy takes a lot of discipline, forethought and knowledge. Or, maybe just a personal chef to do all of that for you!

We have just the lady to help you out – BJ Corpening, owner of Bread of Life Personal Chef Services. After taking her one and only nutrition class while pursuing her Culinary Arts degree, BJ began researching the options and benefits of healthy cooking and eating. It was at that point she realized her purpose in life was to help others in the quest to eat natural, healthy foods that benefit the body. Read on to hear her story and see what she can do for you.

Little Black Dress | Little Red Wagon: What is Bread of Life all about?

Chef BJ: It’s mainly a personal chef service, which is how it all started. I’ve recently branched out to corporate and individual catering. I make meals that are healthy, balanced, fresh, organic, and hormone free.

LBD: How did you get started in this business?

Chef BJ: After I got my degree, I tried the restaurant business and didn’t really like it. I prayed a lot about the decision, because I didn’t want to go into business for myself. But it seemed like the best way to get my culinary point of view across about being a healthy cook. Obviously, restaurant-style cooking is not always the healthiest way, so I decided I had to cook on my own. That was 2004, so I’m in my ninth year!

Chef BJ cooking up some goodness!

LBD: Why this is type of cooking so important to you?

Chef BJ: People always say, “I should eat healthier…I should…I should…I should.” We don’t take the time to actually do it. People choose convenient food over fresh foods. I’m telling people, “It’s cheaper, it’s easier, it’s healthier to cook from fresh than it is from convenience foods.” Convenience foods will just add a lot of garbage to people’s system and if they want to lose weight and just feel better overall, this is one way of doing it.

LBD: So this all came from your one nutrition class in school?

Chef BJ: This one semester of nutrition just clicked with me and I started reading on it and I was just absorbed with the fact that food was so important. I realized we aren’t eating just to feed ourselves; we’re eating for our health. It was like dominos, needing to know more and more. It became important to me to know the source of my ingredients.

LBD: What are some practical tips for families with kids about eating more naturally?

Chef BJ: Find out what they like and cook the same thing on your own. Like chicken nuggets, for instance – make them yourself at home, either fried or baked. If you can have your children help you in the kitchen – chopping or stirring – it will make them want to eat it. They take ownership of it and they love that and become interested in it. Take them to the grocery store or the farmers market. They will see that this is where our food comes from and this is why we eat it.

LBD: Tell us about all of the services you provide.

Chef BJ: I do the personal chef services, where I bring everything needed to cook meals and prepare them in people’s homes. I usually cook multiple meals while I’m there and vacuum seal them for easy storage. I also do catering services, dinner parties, cooking lessons, and romantic dinners for two.

We found that Chef BJ comes highly recommended from those who have benefited from her services!

“On behalf of Smith & Howard I would like to say thank you for your catering services during our busy season this spring. Many of our employees reported higher energy levels due to the health conscious menus you selected. We were also very impressed with your professionalism and flexibility to accommodate the wide range of tastes of our staff.”

Holiday Week Two: No Pain…No Gain

If you’re new here, we’re following Holiday’s 90-day weight loss challenge. Here’s this (adorable) Acworth resident’s latest update on the goods and bads of shedding pounds and getting healthier.

Week Two…by Holiday

Holiday and her daughter Elizabeth in 2008

I believe the phrase goes something like this…no pain, no gain, right? But wait a minute- this is a weight LOSS challenge…the word gain shouldn’t be anywhere in this equation. And then it hits me like a freight train of cupcakes. Maybe this SHOULD be a gain challenge. Sure, I’ve got a few pounds to lose, but I’ve also realized there is quite a bit to gain here.

First on the list? Muscle. And this, my friends, comes along with some pain. It wasn’t until I completed my second workout with my Bill Burke that I appreciated the value of a personal trainer. To say that my body is in shock is an understatement.

But, despite the pain (or because of it), I’ve been able to maximize my workout time and burn more calories than I could ever do on my own. My favorite trainer quote of the week: “In between sets do some active rest…like crunches or planks.” Really??? Is he serious???  Last time I checked, doing a set of crunches involved the exertion of energy, and holding a plank for longer than three seconds was borderline hell on earth.

He was, indeed, serious. Apparently the word “rest” and I need to be reacquainted.

Elizabeth and her daughters, for the fall 2010 cover of Little Black Dress | Little Red Wagon Magazine. Photo by Captures by Summer

Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is power, and he is giving me the tools to kick some serious tail. So now I totally get it. I used to think I couldn’t afford a personal trainer. Now I realize I can’t afford not to have one (and no, he didn’t pay me to write that!). I’m a busy chick- so if I’m going to carve out time for the gym it better be well spent. Mission accomplished.

A few other items on my list of things to gain: confidence, endurance, and let’s not kid ourselves…the need for a new wardrobe (if only the execs at J.Crew could sponsor me…ahhhhhhh).

After a week of swapping meals for shakes and a few intense workouts with Bill (minus the bad spandex pants) I am feeling pretty darn good. My knees wobble and my arms feel like lead by the time I leave the gym. I feel sympathy for the guys at the gym who have to watch me attempt to complete 45 burpies in a row. And I’m nearly positive the cashier at Publix was tempted to call 911 upon seeing my bright RED face the other day. It’s all good though– after all, no pain no gain.

Since posting the announcement of this challenge I’ve received some really awesome feedback. Turns

Holiday in 2011

out I’m not alone in this whole journey to good health thing. As Bill would say, “I hope you have a professional and physically productive week.” Yes, he really says that stuff. And yes, WE really mean it.

Holiday today, in 2012

Meet Tara Shaia, LBD’s 2012 Cover Contest Winner!

We’ll give you three guesses as to which celebrity our summer 2012 cover model Tara Shaia often gets mistaken for. Ready, set, guess.

Did you guess Kelly Ripa? Tara gets that comparison often. Maybe it’s the petite frame (both clock in at under 5’3″ and about, oh, 95 pounds)…or the sparkly blue eyes (holy lashes, Batman)…or the Tabitha-on-Bewitched-esque smile…or the particularly adorable sense of humor…or the precious kids…or the cute hubby (sorry, Jeremy, we had to point out that coincidence, as well).

We already know how Kelly Ripa spends her mornings, so let’s meet Tara, shall we? This busy mom of two (Chloe, 4, and Madeline, 18 months) answered some questions for us: some deep and insightful, others just plain fun.

LBD|LRW:  So, do you see the resemblance to Kelly Ripa?

Ha! No, I think people are crazy, but it’s very flattering!

LBD|LRW: How did you and Jeremy meet?

Tara: We met at UGA near the end of my freshman year in college, when I was just 18! We’ve been together for 13 years and married for seven. I can’t believe how far our lives have come.

LBD|LRW: What’s your advice for keeping a marriage close, even in the midst of hectic lives?

Remember to continue to “date” each other and keep things fun!

LBD|LRW: Have you always been a Georgia girl?

Yes, I have! I was born in Atlanta and have lived here ever since. I “grew up” in Snellville.

LBD|LRW: What’s your favorite thing about your life right now, in this stage?

I love having young children and watching them discover new things and ideas for the first time. There’s nothing like that sweet, innocent, child-like wonder.

LBD|LRW: What’s your least favorite thing about this stage of your life, right now?

Probably discipling. We have a lot of that going on right now with the toddler “tests of wills.” Discipline is definitely a necessary evil, but no one enjoys doing it!

LBD|LRW: What was your life like prior to being a mommy?

I went to UGA to study advertising. Right after college, I began working with the Georgia Force Arena Football team while I waited to get my foot in the door of an advertising agency. After a couple of seasons, I finally got an internship at Cole Henderson Drake. Thankfully, the internship eventually led to a full-time media buying position within the company. I was a media buyer for almost four years for Wendy’s…until I became a mommy.

LBD|LRW: How do you most enjoy spending your time?

Being with friends and family, running, photography, painting, traveling, and shopping!! I have also started a new venture of writing a children’s book!

LBD|LRW: How, as a woman and mom, do you try to truly shine?

I think shining as a woman means staying true to the person you are, and always striving to be the best version of you that you can be.

To me, shining as a mother means celebrating the little moments in life. Celebrating and cherishing the time we have together because it goes by SO fast!! I want my girls to know how proud of them I am, how much I love them, and that I am always behind them. Ultimately, I am here to love, support, and help them grow into the people God has made them to be.

Some fun facts:

a. What’s your favorite book: The Help

b. Favorite movie: Gone With The Wind and Father of The Bride

c. Favorite quote: I have several favorite Bible verses, one of which is Jeremiah 29:11-13. “For I know the plans I have for you, “ declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.”

d. Favorite food: Anything Mexican! My favorite restaurant is Nava in Buckhead.

e. Favorite way to unwind: Vacation!!

f. Favorite things to do with your family: As simple as it sounds, we LOVE getting ice cream together…frozen yogurt is our favorite!

g. Best advice you’ve ever received: To keep God in the center of your marriage always.

h: When you look at your life, what are you most proud of? My family! It has been a tremendous blessing to see what God has done in our lives since Jeremy and I met.

best tortillas: OTP and ITP

the grub:

This girl loves to eat. Top on my list: really good (like really good) Mexican food. On my perpetual quest for the perfect tortilla, I’ve discovered two share-worthy purveyors who rank above the rest. One is OTP and one ITP, so whether you’re roamin’ the ‘burbs or exploring the urban jungle, your tortilla needs are covered.

The Tortilla Masters

OTP: Taqueria Tsunami

Taqueria Tsunami Latin-Asian Kitchen opened in the fall of 2011 on the Marietta Square (they also have a location in Buckhead). The tortillas are the addictively chewy, handmade variety– the kind that, really, you could throw anything on top and they’d still taste dang good. But, when you throw on some thai chicken with fresh slaw, oh man. Watch out. The baja fish taco is also superfine.

And, you really must try the ah-maazing avocado cilantro egg rolls while you’re there. This signature appetizer demonstrates Chef Scott Kinsey’s tantalizing creativity. The housemade sangria ain’t bad, either.

ITP: Chuy’s

The tortilla-making station located in the center of Chuy’s should be a clue. There, a group of apron-clad ladies hand shape made-from-scratch tortillas right before your eyes. And, yes, they taste just that fresh. Again, toppings are really optional, but the fajitas are a great way to enjoy these fluffy floured darlings.

Chuy’s is also famous for its fresh sauces, so get a bowl of chips and enjoy some pico de gallo, green chili, and Ranchero sauces. Yum-o.

Pip from The Voice – in the words of his proud mama!

In case you didn’t know (a.k.a. you’ve been locked in seclusion the last few months) one of our very own Marietta boys – Pip (or Phillip, as his mom still calls him, saying from time to time, “I guess I should be saying Pip!”) – is in the running for the coveted title of The Voice. We talked with his sweet southern mama, Chris, and asked her all about the experience, the fame, the bowties and what we can all do to keep Pip safe from elimination!

Little Black Dress: What has the whole experience with The Voice been like for Pip and your family?

Chris: I’d say overwhelming and unexpected. When he went to audition, we were really excited, but we never dreamed he would go this far. We knew he was a great singer, but we knew there were a lot of great singers out there! Apparently he’s got something that they’re looking for.

LBD: What do you think that “something” is?

Chris: I think it’s the dimples! {laughing} No, I think it’s his charismatic personality. It just draws people in. He had a small fan base locally before he went to be on The Voice, and you could see it developing then, but they’ve really fine-tuned it.

He’s really just a sweetheart in real life. I think that has caused [the people who work on] The Voice to adopt him in and really like him a lot. They like the whole southern gentleman thing.

LBD: Tell us the story of the bowties and his snazzy look.

Chris: Those are all given to him by Southern Proper. They were on the phone five minutes after he performed his audition. The girls who started the company, Emilie and Reagan, are Pip’s sister’s sorority sisters so they already knew him. All the bowties you see him wearing are theirs.

His sister Eileen and I helped him put that whole outfit together. She graduated from Brenau University with a degree in Musical Theater. When he first went to audition, they thought he was so good. They said, “You’ve got exactly what we want, but you gotta step up the dress!”

Pip had just started his sophomore year of college and joined a fraternity and he was noticing this whole, as he calls it, “frat look.” My daughter understood that. So, we’d go to the store and get clothes and bring them home and he’d try it on and choose what he liked. That’s how the whole look and the bowties came about.

Pip with his sisters Bridget and Eileen and brother-in-law (who he calls his brother!) Josh

LBD: What is it like to see Pip achieve some level of success in the public eye and already have some semblance of fame so quickly?

Chris: The situation seems separate from Phillip and the boy we know, but he still just seems like my son. Whenever he’s back home, he’s just “Phillip” – laying on the couch, asking me to make him food or rub his back.

But seeing him on TV, it’s like seeing Phillip playing a part – Pip. Which is really kind of what it is. The bowties, the suspenders, that’s all playing the part of Pip.

LBD: So, what are your predictions for the show and Pip?

Chris: I’m so amazed he’s gotten this far, nothing would surprise me at this point. But, I’m happy with any results, because he’s already gotten so much exposure. Even if he gets eliminated, he’s already got agents and producers contacting him, so he has possibilities. And, if he isn’t eliminated Monday, he’s in with The Voice and their tour and all of the things they will have lined up for the top eight.

LBD: Is this something you would have predicted for Pip when he was younger?

Chris: Not this, really, but I always knew he was talented. When he was younger than two, I noticed he could carry a tune really well. I got him involved in musical things early on, like local productions. They’d ask on the form if he could be in the background if he didn’t make the lead, and I’d always check “no.” I knew he’d get the lead. And he usually did!

Video of two-year-old Pip singing

He also played at places around the Marietta area a lot with his friend Melissa Drummond. And he was in the band at St. Joseph’s, where he went to school and church, singing lead and playing keyboard.

Video of Melissa and Pip at West Cobb Diner

He doesn’t like to be up front because of the fame or recognition, but he likes the connection. To this day, that’s what he loves all of this for – the connection with the audience and the fans. He likes to please his fans and give them something they can enjoy.

LBD: What will be the best part of Pip’s fame for him and for your family?

Chris: Pip is the kind of guy that moms want their preteen and teenage daughters to be looking up to. He’s got a good heart and is good to people. He will set such a great example for kids and be a great hero for them to look up to. People will gain something from him. It won’t just be about him and his fame, he’ll give to the world.

LBD: How can we help Pip go all the way?

Chris: Pip has designed a Save Pip Poster. (Click to download) Everyone can contact Adam and ask him to save Pip. Your readers can all go and do that and send it to their friends and keep passing it along. Also, everyone can vote multiple times between 10 p.m. Monday and 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.
