The actual Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK) week is February 13-17, but we couldn’t wait a whole year to bring you these amazing ideas for spreading a little love in the world. Read on to find out why giving back in the tiniest ways can make a big, bright difference.
Do you ever have those weeks where the world seems like a big, scary, hopeless place? Well, there’s something you can do to help shake away that gray cloud for yourself and others. By giving just a little bit of your time and energy to making someone else’s day, you’ll reap the rewards of utter exhilaration and joy. And that’s not all. According to a study at Dartmouth, performing and witnessing acts of kindness can release oxytocin, the feel-good hormone. It also helps reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and increase your life span. If those aren’t reasons to get on the kindness train, we don’t know what else is!
Did you hear about the sweet man in Texas who spent an entire evening buying ice cream for everyone at his local ice cream shop? By the end of the night, he had spent $1,300 and received countless hugs and love from grateful customers. Though we may never know how far his kindness reached, there’s no denying he positively affected the lives of so many on that day.
So how can you get involved and start spreading the love immediately? Here are eight awesome ideas for bringing a little sunshine to the world:
RAOK #1: Pay for the person behind you. The next time you’re in the fast food line, go ahead and pay for the next person. The employee will feel as much excitement as you and you’ll make the day of someone who might just need it.
RAOK #2: Drop off cookies or a meal for your local fire department. They spend every day taking care of the community by helping others and they always love a good meal.
RAOK #3: Leave love notes in the bathroom. Sometimes women are the hardest on themselves. Choose a fun location and leave little notes in the bathroom that say, “you’re beautiful,” “looking good,” or “keep going.” Little inspirations will make the day of everyone that steps inside.
RAOK #4: Make a blessing bag. Stock bags for the homeless with toothpaste, toothbrushes, food (like chips and apple sauce), a deck of cards, toilet paper and other toiletries and keep them in your car. Whenever you come upon someone who needs a little help, just share your blessing bag out of the window.
RAOK #5: Buy a dinner for an armed forces member. They defend us every day, so show a little love for all they do.
RAOK #6: Call and tell the manager about an employee that did a great job at your grocery store or shopping center. They’ll be thankful for the kudos and it will inspire to keep up the positive attitude.
RAOK #7: Drop off crayons and coloring books at your local pediatric wellness centers.
RAOK #8: Put extra money in the snack machine so the next person can have a snack on you. They’ll be excited about their good luck.

The most important thing you can do is pass it on.
