There’s nothing more fun than a good, old-fashioned egg hunt. From the White House Easter Egg Roll to your own backyard bash, thousands of eggs will be hidden, found and cracked this weekend.
Have you ever wondered why we use eggs as a symbol for our spring celebrations? According to a Time Magazine article, decorating eggs dates back to the 13th century when churches had their congregations abstain from eating eggs from Lent until Easter. To celebrate the occasion, people would decorate the eggs in anticipation of consuming them. Today, we still spend time dyeing and decorating our eggs. And what about the bunny? When did he start delivering eggs to our baskets? In the 16th century, German immigrants settling in Pennsylvania brought with them their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit, called Osterhase or Oschter Haws, who delivered colorful eggs. Children would build a nest for the hare and wait for the eggs to come. As the tradition progressed, our common-day nest transformed into a basket and the bunny also brought chocolate and toys in addition to the beautifully colored eggs.
So how can you get in on the egg fun? There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate the season right here in Cobb County. Check out the awesome events that are coming up this week. Let us know about your favorite spots in the boxes below. Go on, get cracking!
