Who needs a spa day? We do! Luckily, you don’t have to go much further than your kitchen cabinet to have an exfoliating experience that’s sure to leave you refreshed and invigorated.
The winter weather can wreak havoc on your skincare routine! The dry inside air, combined with the winter wind and the severe lack of Vitamin D can cause you to look all kinds of rumpled. And with an already jam-packed schedule, it can be hard to carve out time to have a spa experience. But if you’ve got two hours and a Saturday night, we’ve got some tips to get your skin back to bliss. Here’s what to do.
Light Some Candles and Set The Mood
Pretend you are really at the spa and fix yourself some herbal tea or a green smoothie. Play some soft music, grab your favorite magazine (May we suggest BWRW?), run a warm bath and light some aromatherapy candles. (Don’t you feel better just thinking about this?)
Mix Your Magic
You can make an exfoliating scrub at home with some natural ingredients that you’ve probably never thought of. To start, add coconut or olive oil, honey or yogurt to a bowl. Though it may sound a little silly, honey is actually a humectant that helps heal and moisturize. And yogurt contains enzymes and lactic acid which help smooth the skin by fighting hyperpigmentation and evening out skin tone. Now that you have your base, you’ll want to mix in one of these exfoliating agents:
Oatmeal. Since the texture is course, the oats help remove impurities (like dirt) from the skin and also contain vitamins, minerals and lipids that help fight free radicals that can damage your skin cells. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of oats have traditionally been used to treat Poison Ivy and Eczema, so there’s no reason they can’t handle a little parched skin.
Tip: We’re talking natural oats here and not the Quaker kind that has sugar added.
Sugar. Made of tiny particles, sugar works as a great exfoliator to rub away dead skin cells. It also contains glycolic acid which helps to remove the top layer of your skin, revealing beautiful, shiny skin.
Lemon. Think of lemon as your toner. Adding it to your face can help even out skin tone and awaken the skin’s natural brightness. You’ll look and feel refreshed after using a mask containing the citrusy ingredient.
Go Ahead, Feel Pretty
Once combined, apply the scrub to your face and rub in a circular motion for about 60 seconds. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Tip: For an all-over body scrub, add sea salt to your bath so that you can soak or use it as a foot scrub to remove impurities from the body.
Now that you’ve gotten rid of the dry, cracked skin, you’re ready to apply your favorite moisturizer and some cucumbers to your eyelids. Lay back and relax while you take in the feeling of ultimate serenity. For an extra relaxation boost, heat up wet towels to put on your feet and hands. Welcome back, hot mama! Repeat as necessary.
