We all have idyllic images of summers filled sipping sweet tea on front porches, but, in Georgia we tend to spend more time swatting than sipping when we head outdoors. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are huge fans of Southern humidity and hospitality alike.
These flying pests were the main warm-weather complaint of Paulding County residents, Jerry Accettura and his wife, Cindy. Having tried a slew of OTC insecticides that were less than effective, Jerry saw a need for an innovative, safe, effective, botanically derived mosquito control system.
Lots of research and development led to Mosquito Monster, a company Jerry and Cindy launched this past year in Metro Atlanta. (It’s environmentally friendly, y’all!) Now, the Accetturas and their clients are breaking back out the sweet tea.
Here’s how Mosquito Monster is helping Southerners reclaim their front porches (and backyards).
How Mosquito Monster works ||
Three mosquito control options:
1. State-of-the-art misting system.
Installed inconspicuously around a property, this system can be automatically set to spray at sunrise, dusk and 2 a.m. – times when mosquitoes are most active. The system can also be customized via a smartphone app to spray on-demand — say, before a party. The insecticide used is Pyrethrum, which is derived from chrysanthemum flowers, a natural mosquito controller. Pyrethrum is biodegradable and considered safe for pets and humans.
2. Season-long or one-time event barrier spray treatments.
Barrier spray treatments are applied regularly by a Mosquito Monster specialist, rather than by installed misting systems.
These treatments can be applied every 21 or 42 days, depending on the service chosen. Mosquito Monster’s treatments ensure longterm effectiveness because they also break the reproductive cycle of the mosquito.
Barrier sprays can also be applied before events, weddings and parties via a one-time application service.
3. Organic barrier spray treatments.
Mosquito Monster organic sprays are essential oil blends, like concentrated rosemary and peppermint, that are lethal to flying insects but not harmful to birds and mammals. Mosquito Monster’s organic treatment is an EPA FIFRA 25(b) exempt, organic-compliant insect control with killer results.
No aquatic setback requirements allows for treatment near or over open water, and no required re-entry period makes this option perfect for treating areas with a lot of human activity, such as businesses.
Organic options are reapplied every 21 days due to their biodegradable nature.
But … is it safe?
Q. How can the barrier spray continue to kill mosquitoes for such a long period of time between treatments?
A: Mosquitos rest in the foliage of plants. All Mosquito Monster barrier treatments are applied to these foliage areas where they dry, forming a long-lasting barrier. If the mosquito lands on the treated foliage, it will die. The botanical ingredients are safe to mammals and the environment; they are also biodegradable, hence the need for reapplication.
Q. Will the treatments harm my pets?
A: All pesticides for use as larvicides and adulticides must be registered with the EPA and the State of Georgia. Mosquito Monster is committed to using pesticides, including pyrethrum, that are not only approved but used according to label instructions. This insecticide is considered to have low-toxicity to mammals.
Also, it has been used in agricultural and equine applications for a quarter century with no known harmful effects. Not only is the use of pyrethrum safe, but its effective control of mosquitos helps protect pets, especially dogs, from contracting heart worms, which are spread primarily through mosquito bites.
“Mosquito Monster has been treating my lawn for several years now. I noticed a marked improvement almost immediately. Last year, we never were bothered with mosquitos at all! The treatment is very safe and effective. Not only will your entire family be protected, but also your pets will be at a lesser risk of heart worms. This is a great company and I will continue to use them every year!” — Tanya Renee D., Mosquito Monster client
